Notice Type
An IRS CP22A notice means the IRS made changes to your tax return and you now have a balance due because of those changes. In many cases, CP22A reflects changes you requested or other account adjustments processed by the IRS. The notice explains the revised amount, the balance now owed, and the payment due date.
IMPORTANT: Compare the CP22A with your filed return, any amended return or adjustment request, and your IRS account records before paying. If you agree, pay the amount shown by the date printed on the notice to limit additional interest and penalties. If you disagree, use the contact instructions on the notice and have your supporting records ready.
Before You Respond
Identify the tax year, the specific changes shown, the revised tax or credit amounts, payments already posted, and the resulting balance due. Compare those items with your original return, any Form 1040-X or other correction you submitted, and proof of payments. If the IRS adjustment reflects what you requested and the balance is correct, the remaining issue may simply be payment. If the adjustment does not match your records, document the difference before responding.
Know Before You Act
CP22A is an adjustment notice with a balance due, not the same as a later collection notice such as a CP501 balance-due reminder, CP503, CP504, CP90, or LT11. If you agree with the adjustment but cannot pay in full, IRS payment options may be available. If you disagree with the adjustment itself, the first question is what was changed and whether the IRS account reflects the correct return, amendment, payments, and credits. If a new correction to the return is needed, the IRS may require Form 1040-X. A CP11 return-changed notice or CP14 balance-due notice can involve related account information, but each notice should be reviewed on its own terms.
